We are still in the midst of our section 44 embarrassment.
Accusations are flying hither and thither. It seems to me if a person is asked if they are still a dual citizen and they say no. They even give you the year they 'got rid of' their other citizenship then that is fine. It is also fine for anybody to check that out. however the onus is on the person asking to show that the answer is false. I hope we are not living in an age where the onus of proof is quite clearly reversed.
Just remember if Bill Shorten is caught lying on this then the ALP goes from being odds on at winning the next election and he goes from being the next Prime Minister to not even being in politics!
Bill Shorten's case is quite different to the people caught up in this imbroglio. The others found out they were dual citizens and thus had to refer themselves to the Court of Disputed Returns. Only the Greens of all people had the honour of resigning although Xenophon has a good excuse. He checked on Greek/Cyprian citizenship but did not think he would have a fourth rate British citizenship.
Surely the Court of Disputed Returns should look at this matter as urgently as they can. They do not have a large workload!
