Penalty Rates

I cannot get over every time  I read someone anyone saying how penalty rates must go there is only talk about the effect of labour demand but none on labour supply.

I happen to know quite a few Uni students because of Cricket. A lot who work on the weekends           ( mostly at night) . Now if penalty rates were abolished or lowered guess what would occur?
That's right they would not work on the weekend!  They would work during the week and enjoy themselves on the weekend.
My guess is very few people would work over the weekend if there were no penalty rates

If I read another article or research on penalty rates and the problems of labour supply are not mentioned I will scream!

I didn't know about this. It seems quite silly in that it is setting up a two tiered system.

The Ashes third test

Wow,

I can't work this series out at all.

First the Poms beast us easily and then we reciprocate in the second test and then they almost beat us in two days in the third test ( perhaps they might have if Anderson was fit!)

These two teams are changing places particularly the bowlers. I do not understand how test match bowlers can be bowling a good length one test and being hit around the park the next. I maybe  cynical but given the three tests thus far I would be astounded if the nest two pitches were not slow but green seamers. However given Anderson is out the Poms lose quite a bit in taking advantage of such conditions.

The Poms have problems. They have a suspect opening batsman and with Anderson out they might not have the bowlers to get Australia out twice as I do not anticipate Finn repeating his heroics although Broad is due for a large haul given his form and lack of luck thus far..

We do have problems with out middle order. Shaun Marsh in at 4 and Clarke back to his favoured no 5 would seem to be the responsible way to go.I wouldn't make changes to the bowlers as they have shown to be match winners previously.

If form is any guide Australia should win in two days at Trent Bridge and then the Poms win in one day at the Oval!

Happenings at Epping boys High School

Well A student is alleged to have been making statements in support of ISIL to students at Epping Boys High School.

Hmm

I have two boys going there. The vast majority of boys in the team I coach at cricket are at Epping.
This is what I have gleaned.

The boy concerned is:

•  large , has a lengthy beard and looks intimidating.
•  is in his last year at school
•  is not very technologically savvy.
• does not talk about islam much in the playground
• He allows people to express their views and then talks in other words he does not talk down to people
• talked strongly against ISIL 
• Was born in Australia of Afghani descent

ETS V GST

I wrote not long ago about how a scare campaign on the ETS would not have the same effect this time round.
The public have experienced one and found it a big yawn. contrary to what a lot of very serious people believe it was not a major issue in the last election.

Moreover if it is linked to the ETS in Europe it is going to start at a low level so the initial price could well be less than half the $27 it was when a fixed price.

Now Tony Abbott could well be going to the next election promising to double increase the GST by 50% with the extra money going to the States for Health.

Here is the rub. Which measure will raise electricity prices more?  Yes you guessed it in a highly ironically move Tony Abbott would do more to cut emissions by raising electricity prices however you lose a lot of the benefits of what the ETS would do.

Adam Goodes

Apparently a lot of politically correct people do not like spectators booing Adam Goodes at Aussie Rules games. Indeed they claim it is racist.

Racist ah.

The Swans have other aboriginals playing in the team. Do they get booed?   NO!
Other Aussie rules teams have aboriginals in their teams. Do they get booed? No

It is only Adam Goodes.

It could well be they boo him simply because he is a tosser. It has been so ever since people have have going to sporting games.

It is pertinent to say here this only started when he deliberately made provocative gestures to part of a crowd. The only reason he wasn't fined , like any other sportsman, was because he was allegedly displaying his heritage.

Postscript
I should have added previously a person who pays their money at the turnstiles is entitled to cheer or boo as much as they wish.

Update:

If in a test match between Australia and New Zealand a Kiwi forward did a haka at Australian supporters immediately after scoring a try most people would see that as a provocative act. It is the same for Goodes!

When was was a young teenager I had a mate who was a Canterbury Bankstown supporter and I went to watch his team with him and his Dad. I heard the terms ape and monkey made frequently at players who were hirsute.  It has never been a racist term where I have been.
