what has the tests told us thus far

Both Pakistan and the Windies hadv only average bowling attacks. At best they had 3 and 1/2 test bowlers, none of whom could be called great , yet except for the first test against Pakistan the australian batsmen struggled against them. ( it makes you think that South Africa should have done much better last season.)

It must be said the pitches have been much better with bowlers being much more competitive against the bat. Hooray the flat tracks are gone. It makes for better viewing. We can also see how  much quality there is in the batting. The answer is not much. In the last four tests we only saw one century and that entailed a hellva lot of luck.

It must be said Smith, Williamson and Kholi are all in decline. The tour of India ( starting on Jan 29) will determine if Root is as well.

Test cricket would be much healthier if both Pakistan and the windioes picked their best test sides. Larger payments for playing should be on the ICC's agenda.

I shall watch with interest to see how the windies go in the pink ball test in Brisbane.
