The Ashes A Review

I do not want this Ashes to end. It has been thrilling from start to end.

Let us go through the basics.

  • The Crowds have been fantastic. The poms dress up in crazy costumes and create a wonderful atmosphere.
  • The pitches except of Headingley have been too flat and favouring the batsmen. Without 'bazball' we would have had three maybe four easy pommy wins given they batted first. Bazball created risk and wickets for our bowlers.
  • The poms were the best team. They lost the first two tests , we di not win them.
  • Four of the test were very close. The ebbs and flows in those four tests simply took your breath away. England did monster us in Manchester.
  • Stokes is right up there with Mark Taylor and Ian Chappell as one of the best captains i have ever seen. given his limited bowling resources he is perhaps the best.
  • Has Anderson lost his outswinger. Yes he had little luck but that magnificent outswinger seemed to be lost and if he does not find it he will not play test cricket again.
  • The umpires were poor. Robinson should have been reported in the first test  for swearing at Kawaja of all people and they should have inquired about all the circumstances in the Bairstow stumping.
  • Can they get the dukes ball back to swinging at the start please
Both teams are aging. England will not have any of their bowlers in Australia and our side will be missing a number of batsmen and bowlers as well  in the next Ashes.

Inflation is dropping.

Well the CPI was released yesterday and we found out inflation is stil lfalling however the fall is not fast ( as in other countries.

Here is the Quarterly CPI and Monthly CPI.

John Hawkins has a good article on it.

I do not think there is any reason to further raise interest rates but I tend to think the RBA will raise them another 25 basis points. If for no other reason to ensure the new governor ( governess?) has no reason to raise rates but mainly to ensure inflation does fall back to where the RBA wants it.

Raising rates to combat a supply side shock is a bad way to combat this kind of inflation BUT the RBA has NO other weapon.

Papa John Creach

I am still in awe of Oppenheimer and looking forward to the 5th test so why not some music.

Papa John Creech was a master of the fiddle. ( what is the difference between a violin and a fiddle?). I was never a fan of  Jefferson airplane or in any further manifestations but he was the star!

What do you think.

Oppenheimer

My whole family went to see Oppenheimer last night.

I have just two words. WATCH IT!  Warning it is long but you really do not 'feel' it.

I do think Robert Downey Jnr stole the film.

the 4th Test

Unfortunately rain ruined this test. It would have been nice and exciting to have the oval test as the decider HOWEVER the poms have only themselves to blame. They should have won the 1st test and lost the 2nd test because of irresponsible batting.

What did we learn?

First to the poms. Their batting has arrived. They positively flogged our bowling and made it look send rate. Bairstow returned to form both as a batsman and WK. In terms of bowling what has happened to Jimmy Anderson. I had previously said he could play until he is 50 in England. In this series he has barely swung the ball.  The reason he is one of the all-time greats is his ability to bowl late outswingers. If he had done this in this series the poms would have already won the Ashes. both Wood and Woakes need to be in the team. ( Woakes can swing the ball but anderson cannot. Go figure.)

Now to us.

Our batting is suspect to late swing as usual and high pace. ( We are lucky the poms have three 90mph bowlers injured.)  Smith clearly affected by Wood's pace as he was by Archers in the last Ashes in the UK. Our bowling is looking very poor. Cummins is easily out best bowler but appears to have no clue. He is like a shot duck. Why are we bowling so many poor short balls that get hit for six? Crawley has a weakness to hitting on the up outside the offstump. Why di we not bowl to him there. The easiest way to reduce runs is to take wickets yet our fields are set to save runs and they do not even do that.

Why di we not select a spinner on a pitch that is always friendly to spinners?

We were lucky it rained for two days.

Onto the oval on friday!

Just a thought but few bowlers on each side will be playing in the next Ashes

Trump and the Law

I have given you some great articles to read over the last few days so it is time to vent my feelings.

It appears Trump wil lbe indicted again only this time on crimes due to the Jan 6 insurrection. It is important to note he could not be indicted if a grand jury did not agree.

It is important to not if the DOJ was being weaponised as alleged then the charges would be thrown out or he would be found innocent as occurred not once but twice under Trump. Trump has lost a number of cases in trying to stop any of these cases. trump has never explained how a weaponised DOJ were able to convince a number of grand juries!

If any of these cases were bullshit as alleged by Trump he would want a very speedy trial to show how poor these cases are. In fact he is doing all he can to ensure thy are as long as possible and start , if they do, after the nest election.

If he is the Republican candidate and wins then my guess is the Supreme court will allow him to pardon himself. However it is important to note If the cases against go ahead and he loses he cannot do this. Then we have the weird thing of a President ruling from gaol!

I have no doubt Trump would bring an authoritarian bent to another Presidency but I do not think the institutions are so far gone as to allow this.

New RBA governor and more

We will have a new governor whose first day of work is my birthday!

Here is Issac Gross on Bullock.  I am with Ross Gittins.  Why you ask?  The RBA was consistently wrong on rates BEFORE covid.  Rates were too high for too long and thus unemployment was higher than it should have been. Bullock was part of the problem there and with and after covid.

Look to Bernie Fraser. By far the best governor we have had. As Harry Callaghan would say he knew his limitations. As at treasury he allowed the bright young things their heads on almost any topis. The RBA having an inflation possibly the most important. He was innovative.

The RBA needed an outsider who was innovative  who would lead another intellectual renaissance. The obvious candidate was David Gruen. A man who is the brightest of the brightest but allows people to think outside the square. his term thus far at the ABS shows him to be an innovator.

A sort of Bernie Fraser with an intellect. The RBA needed to be 'stirred up' and Bullock will not do it.

Let me add another policy measure when tightening is needed. Increase the SGC temporarily. People have less money in their pockets b\ut more in their super. It cuts consumption but makes people better off in the future. something to think about.

The Fadden by-election was a snooze. nothing much happened so everyone won!

Joe Biden

I want to talk about the US and Ukraine but before that it was truly embarrassing for republicans in attempting to investigate the Biden family.

Firstly the 'whistleblower' who alleged corrupt dealing with biden and China was not only indicted but on the road from the law. Oops

Secondly we again had IRS 'whistleblowers' alleging the DOJ, FBI intervened to ensure Hunter Biden got favourable treatment. He didn't of course BUT the Attorney who the Trump administration put on Hunter Biden's case was allowed to continue by Garland. HE said in no uncertain terms he was allowed to do his job with no interference. Oops again.

However we come to Ukraine. We must congratulate biden in getting NATO united again and helping Ukraine. Where Obama was ultra-timid when Russia invaded Crimea and took it Biden has not been so. He has provided weapons and ammunition.

Yet again another however he too has been somewhat timid. He has been far too slow. He did not allow Poland to give Ukraine their MIGs. He was too slow in understanding how tanks were important. Whereas the UK and france have given Ukraine missiles that could go well into russia Biden has hesitated.

It is though Biden wants Ukraine to fight russia with one hand behind their back. russia can lob as many missiles into Ukraine bbut Ukraine should not to similar as that would escalate things!! It is stupid thinking. ( While I am on this we should give them our FA -18s as they do not need aaistrips as good as F-16s and enable to Ukraine to take control of the sky which is vitally important if the russians as digged in as much as we know.)

Biden needs to come to the conclusion the democratic world needs to help Ukraine DEFEAT Russia and as soon as possible.

Energy again

Too much to repeat on this topic.

What do we know.

First of all forget about coal fired power stations for the future. They take too long to build ( 8 years) nd when they are going have far too man units that break down when it is hot. Lastly it is impossible to have dispatchable power with hem. It takes 30 minutes to start or close them down. Must be a reasson why the private sector won't touch them!

Forget about nuclear power. The large power statins take 15 years to build and are some 3-4 times as expensive as renewables. modular stations have similar cost problems and are much smaller. you would need 3-4 of them in a disused coal fired power station. Like coal they cannot deliver dispatchable power. Again must be a reason why the private sector won't touch them. John Quiggin recently wrote about THIS   ( update) and then there is THIS.

Gas is potentially a viable alternative if renewables can't deliver all they have promised as they can deliver dispatchable power however their cost means they really cannot be used a lot.

This leaves renewables whose costs continue to fall. They need transmission  lines because they are in different places to the old coal fired p[ower stations but it appears these costs will not be as great as previously thought given we have a better idea of where the lines should be plus a better use of large batteries.

Rooftop solar is also having a dramatic effect. The  peak in demand has changed from around noon to around 6 pm. The peak in demand is not as high as it previously was. This together with more people getting rooftop solar and the use of batteries to offset demand should have a significant effect of overall demand.

There is no alternative to renewables so we should be trying to get to 82% as soon as possible. the previous government dithered. Caught up in the culture wars the demonised renewables but they knew coal and nuclear were white elephants. they have a lot to answer for.

robodebt

 Robodebt was a disgrace.

Here are four different articles on the topic.

Clearly the coalition came at this from a perspective there were a  lot of 'dolebludgers'  out there milking the system.
No-one apparently thought much about the legalities of this situation. No-one thought of using human beings to use the algorithms which would have brought the problems to the surface immediately.
finally no-one thought of how this would affect those people whom the government would demand money from. This was made worse by the use of debt collectors.
It is a very sorry story of very poor government as all this went through cabinet and no-one asked the basic questions!

A test for the ages.

For the first time we got a decent pitch and thus we got one of the great tests of history. Until England actually won you were not certain which side would win although England were in the best position most but not all the time. Until Wood hooked a six I was not sure England could do it.

It is easy to see test cricket is more enjoyable to watch when the ball is on top. It makes you appreciate good batting more.

Wood was a revelation, how unlucky are England to have not one but three 90 mph bowlers  injured, and surely Tongue will play in Manchester!

Warner is on thin ice and will Green come back into the team? England need to think about their no.3. how brilliant was it in putting ali at no.3! Will Tongue or Anderson come in for Robinson and should Fakes come in for Bairstow.

These Ashes are fantastic
