The Safeguard Mechanism

HERE is ross Gittins writing about the safeguard mechanism and other things climate the day before the deal.

Tony Wood is more optimistic although he had the benefit of understanding the deal.

The first thing to say it is not the best solution. The best solution would be a price on carbon. Thus we ask why won't the ALP introduce a price on carbon. They are fearful of the electoral consequences.

Alas the price on carbon like the GST was quite unpopular UNTIL its introduction. In both cases the public went ho hum and went on with life. People can only be wary of the electoral impact of anything if they think they are poor at selling something. The public has changed a lot since Abbott's act of treason in getting rid of the price on carbon. ( Just remember if Abbot has gotten his way then the impact of russia illegally invading Ukraine would have been similar to Europe and the UK!). The fact both the Teals and Greens won lower house seats means something.

Why oh why does this Government lack guts to do good policy.

The Productivity Commision recommended the safeguard mechanism be much more broad based.
