I was not surprised by the result of the referendum and as 1967 shows bi-partisanism does not guarantee a positive result.
So what are we to make of the result?
What are we to make of the explanation that a lot of voters did not know what they were voting about. I think it does show some voters are stupid or lazy or both. It was not hard to find out what the referendum was about. how in the hell could anyone say they di not know what the referendum was about?
Allied to this was the problem some voters did not think this was a first order issue. They wanted the government to concentrate on reducing inflation for example. These people do not believe anyone can walk and chew gum at the same time!
Others wanted more detail which was always unrealistic. ( See Anne Twomey). The detail comes from the legislation which can only come if a referendum is passed. It can also be changed at any time by any government.
By voting against the voice voters have told the Government and Parliament they do not want input from local aboriginal communities on any policies that affects them.
