David Glasner needs your help

David Glasner writes the excellent Uneasy Money blog. Unfortunately it appears no articles are coming out in the blog BUT he tells me you can read them on a smartphone. I do not have a smart phone so at this stage I cannot read his articles. ( It appears the same thing is occurring at Ocean Acidification.)

Please help him out as he is a great contributor to economic knowledge and a nice bloke to boot.

Test Cricket is dying

I love test cricket. It is the only form of Cricket I like to watch BUT....

It has to be competitive. The Current series against Pakistan is not competitive because one of Pakistan's bowlers ( who is quite good and bowls over 150k) is not playing test cricket but big bash. He would have been crucial against a team who is known for being suspect against pace. ( Lets face it we all are). They are also  missing their best spinner and another pace bowler.

As this test shows you need your best bowling unit in Australia.  Winning a test or even not losing means getting the Opposition out reasonably cheaply. Pakistan has a reasonable batting side but they faced the pressure of Australia getting too many runs.

At present there are three good test teams and the rest and soso.

That is why test cricket is dying.

MYEFO

The Government released its MYEFO yesterday. Stephen Bartos gives us his thoughts which are pretty reasonable.

No question taxation receipts are helping repair the budget but some spending proposals are as well. As you learn in economics taxation is as important as spending as to how it affects the economy.

The budget is slightly restrictive and as I have argued before that is all we can hope for given the previous Government did NO budget repair at all.  you do not make big calls on the structural side when the central bank of the day is raising interest rates. you do it before. As Ken Henry has argued the budget should be in surplus ( or even just balanced) when the central bank starts raising rates.

The Stage 3 tax cuts look very inopportune as they did when passed into law. It is a shame the government does not attempt to change them.

Texas is bonkers on abortion

I am constantly surprised by so-called anti-abortion people in the USA. It is very well shown in Texas.

There has to be caveats in any anti-abortion policy. You must ALWAYS choose the wife over the unborn child where one is attacking the other. You must always choose the wife when her health is under severe strain. You must allow for abortion if the woman is raped and does not want the child or incest is  involved.  You get the picture however bear in mind in most circumstances these examples will be outliers. (They certainly are in Australia.)

In Texas they certainly do not recognise any of this. we have already seen they prefer to put women at risk rather than introduce caveats in their legislation.

But now you have a woman whose circumstances have to be read to be believed winning a court case and then the Texas A/G threatening any hospital who dares treat her. The woman wants to try and have more children to boot!

for a full read and weep

Do any of these politicians realise abortion policies such as this one is a vote l oser as shown in the mid-terms

Criticising Israel is not anti-Semitism.

One thing that has come to the fore since Hamas murdered about 1200 Israelis ( some of which sympathised with Palestinians) has been for people who are pro-Israel to simply say anything criticising Israel is anti semitic. This is not new but has reached levels never seen before. Quite related is for some ( and I do say only some) pro-Israel people to say anyone who supports the creation of Palestine is pro-Hamas.

In both cases it is a monstrous lie. I have seen little support for Hamas's evil deeds. however if Hamas deeds were evil has not Israel's response been just as evil. The proportion of Palestinians dying compared to Israelis is well over 10:1 and growing. If Israel is taking due care when trying to find Hamas fighters then I would hate to see what would occur if they did not care.

As I have said previously it appears Israel had no plan to eliminate Hamas if the worst occurred. This is probably because they never thought the worst have occurred.

You cannot have a war with a terrorist group. They are not an army. Terrorists integrate with the population. Israel would know this from their history of Jewish terrorist groups.

I think the reasons for the lies I have outlined is because these people cannot defend the Israel's governments actions.

It is losing support for Israel quite fast. Indeed if Israel looked in their backyard of the West Bank they might cogitate on why and how Hams is so popular.

Why does Dennis Shanahan have a job?

Kevin Bonham absolutely skewers Dennis Shanahan. He does have a history of writing about things he has no idea about. Bonham shows this in spades.

Renewable energy

Here is a short but highly informative article from vox wonk as i call it on planning-high-renewable-electricity-systems-demand-response.

Just as an added bonus in australia rooftop-solar-installs-smash-record-as-households-turn-to-bigger-systems-put-pressure-on-coal,

This changes the peak in demand ( from very roughly noon to 6 pm) and it also reduces the peak in demand. When batteries finally are available at a decent price it will significantly reduce demand overall.

The Middle East again

We have always known Hamas lies through their nose on most things but i'm afraid we must also acknowledge so does Israel.

Remember we were told Hamas had a command centre operating under the largest hospital in Gaza. Just cogitate on that. A command centre must have largish rooms, tables, chairs, electricity , internet access etc and more. Therefore the tunnels going in and out also have to be large so people can move quickly.

The IDF have had plenty of time to show evidence of their assertion but thus far it has been a big goose egg.

We could say the same about the number of Hamas terrorist's killed. The Organisation is stil loperating smoothly despite the untold Palestinians killed in the hope of killing some Hamas operatives. how many times have we been told about a successful operation without any proof of dead bodies,

In essence Israel's strategy can be seen as not giving a toss about how many Palestinians are killed as long as their targets are killed.

It seems apparent Israel had no idea of what to do after the Hams massacre and have simply indulged in revenge. A kill ratio of over 10:1 is a disgrace.

Just remember Hamas recruits people form families when people have been killed by Israel. Hamas or hamas 2.0 is going to be around for a long time.

No wonder the world is turning against Israel.

Shetland

The very last episode of SHETLAND occurred on Sunday night on the ABC.

It has been a very good series. It is up there with the best of british crime dramas. Unfortunately the reason for Jimmy Perez leaving the police force was not great but last episodes are rarely all that good. This was better than most.

It should be said straight up we never ever saw snow in any episode of Shetland showing yet again murders only occur in summer in the Northern Hemisphere! Even then people were wearing overcoats. the scenery was of course breath taking.

It is sad I won't be able to watch another episode but all good things end.

Thanks for the memories
